St Albans Wood Recycling

St Albans Wood Recycling is a local not-for-profit social enterprise. Which is a fancy way of saying we’re a business that’s not in it for the money. But because we care. About the planet. And about people.

We hate waste. So we collect discarded wood. Perfectly good wood that would otherwise end up in landfill.  We then resell it to anyone who wants it at bargain prices. What’s not to like?

We turn some of it into amazing shelves, table tops or benches. You can find them in our Ideas Hub. Come and visit us and take a look.

Our team is made up of local people with a feel for wood. And we provide work, skills and confidence to people who, for a variety of reasons, find it hard to find regular employment.

Social & Environmental Impact for 2022

Recycling

2,033 tonnes recycled

90% of rescued wood is sent for RECYCLING into woodchip, used in the manufacture of particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon neutral fuel in power stations.

Workers

9 people trained

Working in a team with visible results builds trust, confidence, and a sense of common purpose.  It combats loneliness and feelings of depression. Several volunteers have ended up in full time positions with us.
CO2 saved

1,824 tonnes saved

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Each tonne of wood in landfill creates the equivalent of 800kg of CO2 in methane emissions. We don’t send any of what we collect to landfill for it to rot and create methane.
Reused wood

208 tonnes reused

10% was pushed up the waste hierarchy into REUSE; used by the community for DIY/ building projects or as firewood, or made into a whole range of beautiful products from shelving to dining tables.

By tracking the wood waste we collect and the jobs we create we can show you just how much of a difference we’re making to the health of our planet and to the lives of local people
